Times:

  • Assembly & Instructions at 0930 (for those who will "foxhunt").
  • Foxhunt commences at 1000-1030. (depends when Victorians arrive) Barbeque at 1230

Place: As promised, we have announced the venue as Burnaby Lake Regional Park. Click for a map to the event location and for an overview map of the Burnaby Lake area.

To further Orient those not familiar with Burnaby (the city on the East boundary of the City of Vancouver), Highway 1 is the main East West (TransCanada) Highway into Vancouver and is South of the site.
Lougheed highway (#7 highway) is a main East West arterial to the North of the site. Gaglardi Way is a major North South Arterial (leads to Simon Fraser University) and is East of the Site. The West site Boundary is Kensington Avenue. The trick is that the Park entrance (Avalon Avenue) is off of Cariboo Road. As this area was extensively cut up when the Gaglardi/Hwy 1 intersection was developed, it may be a bit strange to find. I got lost leaving the site this week! The Equestrian Center and the RV Park have signs and that will get you into the area.

We will be meeting in the parking lot at the end of Avalon Avenue (Past the Park offices and the Equestrian Center).

If all else fails we will be monitoring VE7RBY (145.35 – T127.3)

We are looking forward to meeting you and providing a fun event.

Talk-in: 145.350- (127.3Hz tone) VE7RBY

Cost: by donation

Course: Intermediate, 146.565MHz, 5 foxes + beacon

Additional Activities:

  • BBQ after the event.
  • Demonstration of 80m "foxes" and receivers.
  • Display of 2m "foxes".
  • Results ceremony.

RSVP:
All clubs and individuals are welcome, but we ask that you RSVP to:

  • Keith Witney VE7MID (ve7mid@telus.net) if you plan on attending, no latter than 2 weeks before the event.
  • Please specify:
    • A) you will be "fox-hunting",
    • or B) joining us at the BBQ,
    • or C) A+B.

There is no license requirement to receive, so everyone can participate - this is an especially fun event for kids and youth. You need to have a directional antenna, an attenuator, and a VHF 2m band receiver. We always have some equipment to loan and we are keen to give detailed demonstrations to get you "hunting" in no time (Check out the practice dates below).

Equipment testing, demo sessions for newcomers, and fox-hunt practices:

  • May 30th, 9:30am (Central Park in Burnaby, parking lot by the swimming pool off of Boundary Road)
  • June 12th, 9:30am (Bear Creek Park in Surrey, parking lot off of 88th Ave)
  • July 10th, 9:30am (Robert Burnaby Park in Burnaby, Canada Way to 16th Ave, Turn Left on 1st Street )

For more information contact: Lou VE7CGE(loubeaubien@telus.net) or Amel VA7KBA (akrdzalic@gmail.com)

We are also seeking volunteers to assist in organizing and running the event. Have a nice day with VE7BAR - come and help us hide hidden transmitters (foxes). And learn someting fun and new! Please contact Keith Witney VE7MID (ve7mid@telus.net) if you wich to assist.

Foxhunting is certainly fun and a competitive challenge, but it also teaches you important radio direction-finding (RDF) skills that may be called upon in:

  • search and rescue
  • finding unlicensed radio emissions
  • finding noise and interference
  • see, air or land navigation.

For more information, please contact the individuals named above via email or VE7RBY (Net Mondays at 20:00)
